sometimes you just gotta get away — even if that means a staycation in your very own city. i had a friend coming into town from san francisco and rather than stay at home and play hostess as per usual, we decided it might feel much more ‘vacation-like’ to check into one of the fun hotels around los angeles and get out and about town and explore! partnering with hoteltonight, we selected the line hotel in L.A.’skoreatown which is one of my personal favorites. the views of the hollywood hills are unsurpassed, and it really feels like you’ve left town — even in your very own city because you’re surrounded by great ethnic restaurant options to try and just a hop, skip and a jump from excellent shopping and museums.
that brings up the issue of how to pack light for a 3-day weekend away, but still have some stylish outfit options when you’re not 100% sure what you’ll get up to — mix and match, ready for anything ensembles are definitely in need. comfy caftan, flip flops, sun hat, and a bathing suit for the line hotel’s cool pool — check! i threw in my favorite jeans, black silk pants, black tank top and a flowy pink silk top which also wears well with a sleek black t-shirt dress i love (that also rolls up and packs small). a couple pairs of cute shoes (one needs options — heels and flats), my go-to clutch and some sneakers, pj’s, my ipad and i was good to get away!
the line hotel has some amazing food options, too — so checking-in friday night, we had a pre-dinner cocktail by the pool and then ate in the beautiful greenhouse-like commissary where POT, the line’s delicious korean food restaurant was hosting a prix fix meal for the evening. with several courses that each were amazing in their own tasty way, we left feeling happily stuffed and ready to chill in our room with a view. oh, and the waiter was kind enough to wrap up our dessert to enjoy back in the room in our jammies for a slumber party extraordinaire!
saturday, we hit the road around town and visited some of the fun shops around melrose place — a quick stop at moon juice, a visit to Isabel marant, glossier’s pretty new store and then it was time to hit the museum. we opted for the hammer museum which is free, by the way, and has an amazing show up right now — made in L.A., the latest iteration of the Hammer’s acclaimed biennial exhibition, showcasing artists from the Los Angeles area. it did not disappoint and if you can, i highly suggest booking a room with hoteltonight and catching the exhibit before it closes september 2nd. lunch on the hammer’s outdoor patio is sweet idea, too!
from there, we headed back to the line for a rest and relaxation by the pool followed by a true koreatown strip mall dinner at ma dang gook soo which came highly recommended. just a little hole in the wall kind of place, but if you love korean hot pots and noodles, this is your spot. we finished off the night with a drink at the commissary and then another restful night in our room. breakfast was a must-visit to sqirl — one of L.A.’s hottest breakfast/brunch spots. be prepared for a little line, but the amazing (and healthy!) food is so well worth it. the whole weekend was such a refreshing change from being at home because you kind of find yourself being a tourist in your own town, and i think the fact that you’re staying in a hotel, albeit one just a few miles from home, forces you in a really kind and gentle way to get out and explore your own city and see it with fresh eyes! for $25 off your first hoteltonight booking use my referral code VISMITH2 — pack light but ready for adventure and have your own spontaneous getaway!
