Elaborate paper sculptures continue to emerge from ’s Manila studio, including a roiling cockfight that took more than a year to complete. Stretching six feet wide, the monumental work highlights Cabral’s exquisitely cut motifs, which add texture and depth to the otherwise smooth medium. Layers of lace-like patterns, stripes, and other frills adorn the birds shown pre-fight with wings splayed and claws bared.
Cabral () often invokes Filipino culture in his practice. A pair of symmetric sculptures known as parol, or ornamental lanterns often used as Christmas decorations, radiate around a five-point star in cobalt, magenta, and gold.
