Behind the Brand is about getting to know the real design enthusiasts who work just outside the spotlight across our industry. We hear lots from the architects and interior designers, but what about the sales managers and marketing experts who link them with products, specifiers and so on? This time, the focus is on co-working mastermind, Cliff Ho. He is the co-founder and CEO of The Commons, with sites across Sydney and Melbourne that blur the lines between workplace and hospitality. They also host the soon-to-be-released podcast, Stories Indesign.

Timothy Alouani-Roby: Tell us a bit about your background please, both personally and professionally.

Cliff Ho: I started my career as a TV host with Channel V Asia. It was an exciting time – I had the chance to interview incredible artists like Kanye West, Miley Cyrus and Usher. Transitioning from television, I ventured into the production world, focusing on commercial videos with my own production company.

How did The Commons come about?

The Commons began quite organically. I needed a space for my production company, and my high school friend Tom Ye and I discussed the idea of creating a creative workspace together. We found a great spot on Gipps Street, Collingwood, and invited other businesses to join us. We quickly realised there was a real need for shared workspaces, and that’s when we decided to focus fully on creating The Commons.

What came first, a passion for design or business?

For me, they evolved together. Working in media and production taught me to combine creativity with business. Starting The Commons allowed me to use my interest in design and business side by side.

How important is good design to The Commons?

Good design is integral to The Commons. It’s not just about aesthetics; it’s about creating spaces that inspire creativity and foster community. Every element, from furniture to layout, is curated to enhance the experience for our members. We believe that a well-designed environment can significantly impact productivity and wellbeing. That’s why it’s so important for us to work with the best local designers, such as DesignOffice, Foolscap Studio, and Flack Studio. Their expertise and vision help us create spaces that truly stand out and serve our community.

If you weren’t doing this, what do you think you’d be doing?

I would probably be involved in something related to production. I have a strong passion for film, TV and creative work.

Do you have any creative pursuits or inspirations you’d like to share?

I know when to leave it to the experts, and I enjoy working with great designers. My job is to curate the best people and bring them together. Travel also plays a huge role in my creative inspiration; it exposes me to new ideas and perspectives that I can bring back to my work at The Commons.
