Severstal is a vertically integrated mining and steel company developing innovative steel products and integrated solutions. The design of its new office translates the company’s renewed identity — technological, agile, and forward-looking — into a contemporary workplace environment.

The main objective was to create a distinctive office concept that could inform the design of future client-facing workplaces. Building on Severstal’s existing brand guidelines, the project introduces a new spatial and material language shaped by the brand’s core values of human-centricity, care, and digitalisation.

Designed for 75–80 employees, the office provides fewer than 50 assigned workstations, reflecting the company’s hybrid and field-based working model. The layout is organised around flexibility and a variety of work settings, supporting collaboration, informal interaction, and focused individual work.

The open-plan workspace is structured by custom-designed acoustic pods made of vertical felt slats, which create a sense of enclosure without visually isolating employees from the wider office. An unassigned coworking area is positioned closer to the entrance, while permanent workstations are located deeper within the floor plan. This arrangement creates a gradual transition from active, social spaces to quieter areas intended for concentration. Lounge areas, a coffee point, bookable meeting rooms, and personal storage are integrated throughout the office, reinforcing a non-hierarchical workplace culture centred on equality and connection.

The design concept, “digital metallurgy”, brings together Severstal’s industrial heritage and its contemporary technological identity. The visual language is built around the contrast between precise, industrial elements and a warm, comfortable environment designed around the needs of its users.

Steel is used throughout the interior in a variety of forms, including illuminated wave-shaped panels, perforated surfaces, and furniture. Digital-inspired patterns incorporated into the finishes further reinforce the technological character of the space. Clustered lighting systems above the workstations introduce a distinct graphic layer, referencing networks, connectivity, and digital structures.

The industrial material palette is softened through selective use of light-toned wood, textiles, and acoustic felt. These tactile materials improve acoustic comfort while bringing warmth and a more human scale to the workplace.

Custom acoustic zoning systems, integrated and individual task lighting, and digital services designed to optimise office operations complete the project, creating a flexible workplace where industrial identity, technology, and human-centred design coexist within a unified architectural environment.
