The Muji Muji 5.5 House Is A Modular Prefab Home Crafted From Repurposed Classic Muji Products

Paris-based studio 5.5 has transformed everyday Muji products into fixtures and furniture for a creative new modular home, revealed at Milan Design Week. The Muji 5.5 house is made up of six flexible modules, each filled with objects crafted from Muji items like storage boxes, baskets, hooks, and kitchenware.

It includes chairs made from drawer sets, a screen door using box lids, shelves fashioned from wooden trays, and a kitchen sink created from a plastic tub. To encourage DIY creativity, founders Claire Renard and Jean-Sébastien Blanc have provided step-by-step diagrams for 12 unique objects. These guides are available for anyone to download on Muji’s website. “This ensures that no unnecessary production takes place,” said the designers. “It is up to you to create your object locally, using already manufactured, pre-existing products – and only if you truly need it.”

The Muji Muji Ready-Made Collection introduces inventive home accessories crafted from classic Muji products. Highlights include a magazine trolley constructed from file organizers, a birdhouse fashioned from an upturned drawer, shelves created with wooden trays, and a lamp set within a storage tub. Creative touches extend to an upturned bowl and spoon paired as a gong, and a coat rack assembled from pump bottles and a bin lid.

The Muji Muji 5.5 house debuted in a courtyard garden in Brera during Milan Design Week, presenting six interconnected modules arranged in a linear sequence. Each module was thoughtfully sized to match its function, starting with a bathroom featuring a Japanese-inspired wooden bathtub. The second module served as an entrance porch, equipped with seating that included shoe storage and dedicated hooks for hats and coats, showcasing both practicality and innovative design.

The central modules of the Muji Muji 5.5 house serve as the kitchen and a flexible workshop-dining area. Thoughtful touches include a compact larder stocked with stacking jars and metal wall grids for hanging pots, pans, and utensils, maximizing both storage and accessibility. Moving further, the sleeping area features traditional tatami mat flooring and extra cushions for comfort, while the final module is lined with shelves dedicated to growing edible plants and herbs, blending relaxation with self-sufficiency.

The house’s modular design allows for flexibility, with the option to downsize to just three or four modules to suit different needs. Sustainability is central to the concept – the structure is elevated to prevent ground moisture, walls are insulated using recycled textile blocks, and the sloped white roof both reflects sunlight and captures rainwater, ensuring minimal environmental impact while offering a practical and inviting living space.

“This creative, modular, and minimalist home embraces modesty and frugality while addressing the need for serenity amid the city’s bustling energy and spatial constraints,” said Muji. “This adaptable house is built from a catalogue of prefabricated modules that can be added or removed as needed. Its size and interior layout adjust to your preferences, allowing you to create a home that truly suits your lifestyle.”

A Muji representative shared that this design may be offered to customers in the future. If released, it would join Muji’s growing collection of prefabricated homes, which already includes the indoor-outdoor Yō no Ie, introduced in 2020, and the Muji Hut, launched in 2017 and still available in Japan.
