In Montreal, Maguire is an institution. From leather biker boots to green suede Mary Janes, the sister-owned shoe brand’s quality footwear can be seen strolling throughout the city. Even here in Toronto, their Queen Street location has amassed a dedicated fan following (I own a prized pair of Prato Ballerina Ballet flats in Lipstick). But Canada is just the beginning: After opening their first flagship in New York City’s Nolita neighbourhood in 2022, Maguire is expanding its American footprint (pun-intended) with a new store in Williamsburg, Brooklyn.

Carved from a characteristically constrained slice of New York City, the narrow 50-square-metre boutique on Berry Street features brick, concrete and exposed ductwork. But the store still has its roots in Montreal. Headed up by another Quebec-based firm,

“We already knew and loved the brand, so it felt natural. And of course, Montréal is a small city, we quickly discovered mutual friends and realized we share the same design culture,” says Sarah-Ève Hébert, Art Director & Interior Designer at Perron Design.

While it may be an especially fraught time to set up shop in the States (tariffs, discriminatory gender laws and political unrest are just the beginning), it’s always great to see a Canadian brand going international. (Plus, Brooklyn is the place to be for top luxury brands and trendy retailers alike). And from a design standpoint? The interior tells a different story: inviting, dynamic, textural and above all — colourful.

“We wanted to create a strong visual impact and bring energy into this small Brooklyn space,” says Hébert.

To achieve this buzzy effect, the team at Perron leaned into contrast. Building on the soothing warm-white hue of the brick walls, neutral white display modules balance out the tone of the space. Energizing pops of colour dot Maguire’s interior, from the vibrant orange Sancal sofa (inspired by a high-heel shoe) to the light blue tile of the ceramic checkout counter. Drawing the eye to the rear of the room, the signature yellow walk-in closet is approachable and alluring. Above, find a chrome ceiling light by

“The idea was to create a strong visual effect through standout elements much like the Maguire sisters do with their shoes; objects that grab attention and spark the imagination,” says Hébert. “Simple gestures, full of personality.”

And the effect is personal. Maguire’s bright retail interior feels like an intimate snapshot of someone’s home — albeit an exceptionally stylish individual. With exclusive artworks by another Montreal-based creative,
